Teachers can use classroom bulletin boards as a visual aid to teach students about different types of poems, how to write poetry, and to display kids' writing.

Many elementary students are intimated by the thought of reading and writing poetry. Teachers can use poetry themed bulletin boards to create a fun and safe learning environment.

Poetry themed classroom bulletin boards have many uses. Primary teachers can use a bulletin board as a graphic organizer to teach students about different types of poetry by displaying examples of each type or poem. They can use a bulletin board as a how to write a poem visual aid or as an area to display the poetry the students have written.

Bulletin Board to Teach Elementary Kids About Types of Poetry

A fun way to share different types of poetry with elementary kids is to create a Dive Into Poetry themed bulletin board. This classroom bulletin board is used as a poetry reference resource for students.

To make the poetry bulletin board, the teacher covers the board with blue paper and cuts out large letters to write the title Dive Into Poetry! She then cuts out different color pairs of flippers.

On one flipper the teacher writes a type of poem and on the other flipper she writes a description of the poem. The flippers are displayed around the bulletin board and the board is decorated with sea creatures and plants.

Teach Primary Students How to Write Concrete Poems

Concrete poems are poems that are written in the shape of the subject. For example if the poem is about flowers, the lines of the poem will form a picture of a flower.

Elementary students learn to write concrete flower poems while creating a Planting Poetry bulletin board. After teaching students how to write concrete poems the teacher decorates the bulletin board to represent a garden scene and places the title Planting Poetry at the top of the board.

The kids compose their flower poems and then write their final copies in the shape of a flower. The concrete flower poems are placed on the poetry bulletin board to be read by the class.

How to Display and Publish Poems by Students

The Poetry Stars bulletin board is a great way to display student work. To create the bulletin board, the teacher covers the board with black craft paper. Large yellow stars are placed around the board and the words Poetry Stars is tacked to the top.

Student poems are attached to the large yellow stars. The kids’ names and photos are glued to small yellow stars and placed next to their poems. The students in the class and visitors to the classroom are invited to read and respond to the students’ work.

Classroom bulletin boards can be a valuable tool to teach students about poetry. Elementary teachers can use bulletin boards to teach students about different types of poetry, how to write poems, and to publish poems written by students. Poetry bulletin boards create a fun environment for poetry study.

For funny poems to read with elementary students teachers and parents can read Review of What’s the Weather Inside? Poetry Book.

For information of different types of poetry to read and write with elementary kids teachers can read Write ABC, Haiku, Quatrain and Concrete Poems and A Poetry Guide for Elementary School Students.
